The PinchukArtCentre took part in the second media art and performance festival Balaklava Odyssey 2010, held from 12 to 15 August as part of Sevastopol International Art Festival “War and Peace”. Over the course of three days contemporary art oriented galleries and cultural institutions from 9 different countries had been demonstrating their national curator programmes.
For this festival the PinchukArtCentre presented video installations by the Ukrainian artists Arsen Savadov and Georgy Sentshenko “Voices of Love”, Sergey Bratkov’s “Unfinished War”, Illya Chichkan’s “Defenders” and the Vietnamese artist Xun Ngujen-Chazuschiba’s “Memorial project Minamata”, as well as 10 photos from Sergey Bratkov’s cycle “Army girls” and 4 photos from “Kokto” series by Arsen Savadov.
Evgeny Solonin, the PAC’s exhibition manager representing the art-centre at the festival: “The choice of works by these artists is conditioned mainly by the fact that they were showcased in the PAC’s different exhibitions linked, one way or another, to the “War and Peace” theme of the festival.”
The first Balaklava Odyssey festival took place in August 2006. The mission of the project is to create an International centre that would bring together creative endeavours of art and culture personalities from different countries. For the first time, this year Balaklava Odyssey realised an artistic use of the Mikhailov fortress – home for the Military-Historic Museum of Ukraine, and thereby, made a step forward in attempting a cultural revitalisation of former military facilities of Sevastopol.
