“PARCOMMUNE. Place. Community. Phenomenon” exhibition is the result of extended work of the Research platform team of PinchukArtCentre. The project explores the practice of artists, who were somehow related to the squat “Parcommune” – or rather, to the area of former Paris Commune Street (today – Mikhailovskaya Str.), where squats and artistic studios (1989 – 1994) were situated.
In historical perspective, the exhibition raises the question of significance of a specific place, community as well as mutual influence within the group and their relationship with external cultural environment. The exhibition features works of art, photographs, videos and archival materials relating to the life and oeuvre of artists such as Oleksandr Hnylytskyi, Oleg Golosiy, Dmytro Kavsan, Oleksandr Klymenko, Yuri Solomko, Valeria Troubina, Vasyl Tsagolov and many others.
Moreover, with the opening of the exhibition “PARCOMMUNE. Place. Community. Phenomenon” there will be strong public program. The series of events will systematically highlight the results of the Research platform’s work on the theme of the exhibition and explain the specifics of Parcommune as a place, community and phenomenon.
Public program will include lectures, meetings with artists, round tables and discussions with the important players of Ukrainian art scene in early 90’s. We also plan several events with special guests, whose names will be announced later. In addition, our new film program “Bohemian life” will be dedicated to the daily life of iconic art groups of XX century. Right after the opening there will be a curatorial tour by Tatiana Kochubinska and Ksenia Malykh, during which they will introduce tell all the details the exhibition, presented works and their authors. Furthermore, we will meet on Oct. 21st on anthropological discussion “Sex, Drugs, and Rock’n’Roll: Cultural protest and freedom during 90s” with Tatiana Bulah.
The curators: Tatiana Kochubinska, national curator of PinchukArtCentre and research department advisor. Ksenia Malykh, curator of the art-center Closer and co-founder of OK Projects.
Scientific consultant of the project: Aleksandr Soloviov, curator and art historian
