Art-writing Course
A program for culture professionals who want to develop their art-writing skills, find compelling ways to express their ideas, and explore new forms of engagement with art through text.
In 2024, we launched the course Describing the Eye of a Storm, dedicated to exploring new approaches to art interpretation and understanding the role of text in this process. Together with the course mentor, Italian writer and curator Gianluigi Ricuperati, participants experimented with different writing strategies. The program combined online meetings with an intensive week in Kyiv, featuring guest speakers such as Lianne Shapton, Vanni Santoni, Lucy Sante, and Geoff Dyer—authors whose experience and perspectives helped participants see art-writing in a broader, interdisciplinary context.
The outcome of the first year of the course will be a publication in the international journal Nova Express featuring 12 texts by participants: Anastasiia Baklazhko, Yevheniia Butsykina, Olesia Herashchenko (Shambur), Olha Kachan, Vita Kotyk, Maria Leonenko, Alisa Lindeman, Tetiana Malinovska & Uliana Krucha (Kurhanova), Anna Savytska, Svitlana Soldak, Asia Tsisar, and Andrii Ushystkyi.
In 2025, a new cohort of the program Art-writing: How to Write About Art began. The mentors are:
- Olena Huseynova — writer, radio host, and producer. Participants explored affect theory and the impact of literary forms and techniques on text reception.
- Gianluigi Ricuperati — Italian writer, essayist, and curator. He inspired participants to experiment with different writing approaches and helped them find their own voice.
- Waldemar Tatarchuk — artist, curator, and director of Galeria Labirynt (Lublin). His course focused on developing critical thinking and skills for analyzing artworks.
Additionally, participants met with critic Yevheniia Nesterovych and writer Maria Tytarenko.
2025 participants of the program: Svitlana Mikhno, Kuzmenko Anastasiia, Korneichuk Lisa, Verbytska Polina, Tsvihunenko Olha, Dzhabrailova-Kushnir Elmira, Lukash Anna, Shendryk Hanna, Saiutina Polina, Tychyna Iryna, Karpets Yuliia.
The program runs from late May to August 2025 and includes regular meetings at PinchukArtCentre, individual text development, and feedback sessions with mentors.
