The PinchukArtCentre presents “The End of Radio” by Konrad Smoleński - the third one-week solo exhibition in the context of Transfer. Transfer is an exchange programme to promote and support new generation of Ukrainian artists abroad and to offer a dynamic view on young Polish art in Ukraine. This is a common project of the PinchukArtCentre and the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle (Warsaw, Poland).
Konrad Smolenski works with various media including video, installations, performance and happenings. Investigation of sound is a core element of his multi layered artistic activity. By appropriating various artistic strategies he explores the expressive potential of sound as a sculptural form. Apart from sound installations, Smolenski creates sound performances, both as live actions or video documentations, and also performs in music band Panerstwo.
At the PinchukArtCentre the artist presents one of his recent major sound installations, “The End of Radio”. The exhibition space is occupied with hundreds of microphones that produce sound instead of collecting it. The viewer or, rather, the listener finds oneself drawn in myriads of unknown voices, exploring the physical, sculptural dimensions of sound.
Björn Geldhof, Artistic manager of the PinchukArtCentre, curator of the show: “Konrad Smolenski’s Project within Transfer deals with an idea of how sound can take sculptural form. It shows only a small part of the rich artistic practice of Smolenski who continues to develop his artistic language through performances, actions and sculpture, experimenting with the act of destruction as a creative moment.”
The exhibition is organised and co-curated by Lizaveta German, participant of the PinchukArtCentre’s Curatorial Platform. The show is open on the 5th floor in the PAC-UA space from 11 until 16 September 2012.
During the opening, Konrad Smoleński and Lizaveta German will hold an Artist Talk dedicated to “The End of Radio” project. It will take place on September 11, 2012, at 18:00 in the PAC-UA space on the 5th floor of the art centre.
The following day, on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at 19:00, there will be a special lecture “Team Players. Polish Artist Groups” by Agnieszka Pindera, an independent curator based in Warsaw and a member of International Association of Art Critics (AICA). The lecture will take place on the 6th floor at the SkyArtCafe’s video-lounge.
Agnieszka Pindera will give a short introduction on the Polish artist groups, using Konrad Smolenski’s quote from his bio that “he is one of the pillars of the Panerstwo group” as a pretext. She will present a few chosen groups which are to some extend related to Panerstwo, among them: Azorro Super group (formed in 2001), Kolo Klipsa (1983-90), and Luxus (1983-95). These groups will become a background to draw an (in)visible dialog.
Scheduled lectures in the framework of Transfer:
- Daniel Muzyczuk – “Resonating spaces. Polish sound art”, September 19 at 19:00;
- Final discussion – September 26 at 19:00.
The lecture programme is supported by the Polish Institute in Kyiv.
Registration for the lectures is mandatory.
