SUMMERpropaganda from PinchukArtCentre and Docudays UA: discussion “Designing reality through mass media”

On Tuesday, July 8, at 19:00 the PinchukArtCentre and Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival invite to a public discussion on “Designing reality through mass media” under SUMMERPropaganda project. The discussion will focus on propaganda and public opinion manipulation, as well as tools and strategies used by mass media to shape reality. The event will be hosted by founder of Postmen agency and propaganda collector Yaroslav Vedmid.

SUMMERpropaganda is a series of the public film screenings and discussions held in the context of “Fear and Hope” show - a group exhibition of three Ukrainian artists Nikita Kadan, Zhanna Kadyrova and Artem Volokitin. “Fear and Hope” is an urgent artistic response to the new sociopolitical context of Ukraine formed by recent events in the country and ongoing crisis. Art works presented within the exhibition cover topics of memory, nostalgia and history, heritage and the role of media in the modern world, thus creating a platform for discussions that go beyond visual arts.

Public film screenings will help reveal the theme of the exhibition in a broader historical context, referring the viewer to the recent past Ukraine and going beyond a purely domestic background. Screenings will be followed by discussions featuring artists, critics, historians, theorists, political scientists, composers and etc.

Documentaries screening and discussions are held by the PinchukArtCentre and Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, supported by the National Oleksandr Dovzhenko Centre. All events will be taking place at the PinchukArtCentre until end of August. Participation is free.

SUMMERpropaganda from PinchukArtCentre and Docudays UA: screening of documentaries Pussy VS Putin and From Iran, a Separation

On Thursday, 10 July, at 19:00 the PinchukArtCentre and Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival invite to screening of the documentaries “Pussy VS Putin” (Gogol’s Wives, Russia, 2013, 60 min) and “From Iran, a Separtion” (directors Azadeh Mousavi and Kourosh Ataei, Iran/France. 2013, 52 min.) in the framework of SUMMERpropaganda project.

The anarchistic female band and its supporters are the main characters in Pussy VS Putin documentary, a film made by people who documented the band’s actions from its start to imprisonment of its two members for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” in 2012: rehearsals, recordings, public events, detentions, prosecution, trial and support rallies by the court house. This is not a typical documentary with a moralistic editing; the events are followed in a way that allows the viewer to make his or her own conclusions. The directors stay anonymous.

“From Iran, a Separtion” shows the reaction of the Iranians to the Oscar award for the Iranian movie A Separation by Asghar Farhadi in 2012, and portrays a general view on Iran’s society of today. For the Iranian people this was more than a cinematic award. This time the Iranian people’s voice was heard through someone other than the government officials. When sanctions and threats of war with Iran dominated the world headlines, Farhadi talked about Iran’s love for peace and the rich culture of the Iranians on the stage when receiving his award.

After the documentaries the audience will have a chance to join a discussion entitled “Behind the scenes of revolution: creation of a myth” featuring art critic and curator Natalia Chermalykh.
