PinchukArtCentre

8 June 2012

The PinchukArtCentre is one of the most astonishing exhibition centers of Kiev. A project of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, the PinchukArtCentre was inaugurated in 2006 as the first Ukrainian contemporary art center and one of the largest of Eastern Europe. Its chief mission is to modernize the Ukrainian art sector and foster a new generation of creatives. It also aims to bring closer the Eastern and Western cultures, as illustrated by its 2007 GENERATIONS.UsA exhibitions (the first exhibit that brought together in one place works of young artists from Ukraine and the United States of America.) The PinchukArtCentre acts as an international open platform of contemporary art for artists, works of art and society. It engages in activities that span from research, collection, exhibits, communication and education to publishing.

The ambitious program of exhibitions features international artists such as Damien Hirst and Hiroshi Suguimoto as well as Ukrainian artists like Oleg Kulik and Boris Mikhailov. Past exhibitions include An Instictive Eye (a selection of contemporary photographs, selected by Elton John and his partner, David Furnish), and REFLECTION (a showcase of the 2007 centre's acquisitions created by the best 21st century artists from Mexico, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Poland, USA and Ukraine.) Future exhibitions will present the works of Anish Kapoor.

The PinchukArtCentre's futuristic high-tech architectural style is credited to French architect Philippe Chiambaretta/PCA. The architect wished for this museum to serve as a reference for art in Ukraine. He achieved this by giving the PinchukArtCentre a strong identity that stimulates the senses and excites your curiosity for contemporary creativity. The PinchukArtCentre is designed for the visitor to discover the works of artists under optimal conditions. The architect foresaw artistic installations to the scale of the building, resulting in a peculiar reading of the spaces and the building where computers and technology play a prominent role.

The exhibition center occupies four floors of an old building in the center of Kiev, and spreads over a surface of 27,986 square feet. Apart from large scale projects, the art center holds short-term exhibitions only presenting new works by Ukrainian artists. These exhibitions are held in a special art space on the 5th floor of the PinchukArtCentre. At the very top floor of the PinchukArtCentre, you'll find the SkyArtCafe. The minimalist interior decoration is characterized by its white walls and sofas, and large panoramic windows overlooking the plaza, the surroundings of the Bessarabskaya market, and the rooftops of Kiev. In addition to hosting art themed talks, it’s a great place to enjoy a drink among the hip crowd of Kiev.
