Lecture by Kateryna Tsyhykalo — “The Right to the Body: Eroticism and Prohibition in Art”
As part of the public programme accompanying the exhibition “Without Asking Permission,” we invite you to a lecture by Kateryna Tsyhykalo on Thursday, July 16 at 6:30 PM.
The exhibition “Without Asking Permission” brings together works by Ukrainian artists created between the two revolutions — from 2004 to 2014 — in which the body emerges as an instrument of self-determination, protest, and political expression.
The event will take place on the 3rd floor in the exhibition space.
Free admission with prior registration. Places are limited.
Language of the Event: Ukrainian
During the lecture, we will explore:
- how art across different historical periods has engaged with the body, eroticism, and sexuality, drawing on examples from Ukrainian and international contexts
- how ideas about what is considered acceptable or unacceptable have shifted over time
- the concept of censorship in art
- who defines the boundaries of what is permissible in art, and how those boundaries change
Kateryna Tsyhykalo is a PhD in art history, researcher, and curator of exhibition and research projects. She works with contemporary Ukrainian art, art of the second half of the 20th century, and the study of artistic processes in social and historical contexts. Her practice engages with themes of memory, corporeality, artistic freedom, institutional history, and the transformations of Ukrainian art.
