For the first time in the Eastern Europe PinchukArtCentre presents personal exhibition of Brazilian artist Vik Muniz «Vik Muniz: A Survey»

13 April 2007

PinchukArtCentre keeps on acquainting Ukrainians with contemporary world art and presents, from April 14 through May 20, personal exhibition of Vik Muniz «Vik Muniz: A Survey». At his first in the Eastern Europe personal exhibition, the Brazilian artist will present specially selected works which were created in 1993-2007, that is a mini-retrospective which includes about 50 works.

Credo of the artist is: «There are no more objects for shooting. If you want to shoot anything, first create it». Last 20 years Vik Muniz has been constantly expanding boundaries of modern photography and paintings. His works never reflect surrounding reality, except for that created by the artist himself. Unique installations, which are destroyed right after shooting, further live in works of Muniz. For their creation he uses non-traditional, but well-known materials, such as caviar and brilliants, chocolate and gold, soil and sugar, junk and cotton wool, peanut oil and jam, nails and yarn and even... blood.

Works of Vik Muniz have a large range of material and scale and for that reason they require a specific approach. The pictures of pigment require small tools and all the process is done in Vik Muniz studio in New York. The «Pictures of Junk» were produced in the artist’s studio located in a warehouse in the docks in Rio de Janeiro. The photo shooting of works have been made from 30 m height. «Earthworks» formed mega-drawings of 300 to 400 meters and have been photographed by helicopter. These drawings, made by machines in the iron ores of the mountains of Brazil, can be seen from satellites. Some of them can be found in Earth.Google.com.

Thus working on the crossing of pop-art and new realism, Vik Muniz thoroughly develops his plastic and formal view of the history of art and history in general, of the present, as well as modern society of mass consumption, giving them new breath, new existence, which is full of humor, irony and challenge.

Presenting a new project, PinchukArtCentre gives everybody, who is interested in modern and contemporary art, a chance to make own survey of work of one of the most famous Brazilian artists, whose works were exhibited in all the largest museums of the world and at the most prestigious exhibitions of the last decade.

PinchukArtCentre is one of the biggest centers of modern art in the Eastern  Europe. Its basic activities include organization of exhibitions, support of cultural projects etc. PinchukArtCentre was visited by over 75 000 persons since it had been opened. The previous exhibition of young Ukrainian and American artists GENERATIONS.UsA was visited by about 40 000 persons over three months.
