The PinchukArtCentre presents photographs from Sir Elton John’s collection

15 June 2007

The PinchukArtCentre has opened an exhibition "An Instinctive Eye: A Selection of Contemporary Photographs from Sir Elton John's Collection", as announced by the Press Office of the PinchukArtCentre.

According to the announcement, from the time of its creation in 1991 Sir Elton John’s photo collection has been showcased only once – in the High Museum of Art (Atlanta, Georgia, USA). The majority of the works presented in the PinchukArtCentre is the most recent additions to the collection and are being displayed for the first time.

"For years many people have been asking Elton John to organise an exhibition of the works from his collection", admits Jane Jackson, the Collection Director. "Nevertheless, he kept rejecting the idea, for these photographs are not just a simple collection, but something very personal. And only thanks to his friendly relations with Victor Pinchuk and the importance of the work undertaken by the PinchukArtCentre for contemporary art promotion in Ukraine, Elton John agreed to have the works exhibited in Kyiv".

The exposition consists of 148 works of art by 24 contemporary photographers, selected by Elton John and his partner, David Furnish. The lion’s share of the photos, about one hundred of them, have been brought to Kyiv from Elton John’s flat in Atlanta and the rest – from his London house. The list of artists, whose works are presented in the PinchukArtCentre, includes David LaChapelle, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan, Sam Taylor Wood, Rineka Dijkstra, Loretta Lux, Ruud Van Empel, Hiroshi Sugimoto and others.

“We were inspired by enthusiasm of Victor Pinchuk and his foundation with which they invest time and finance, endeavouring to transform the PinchukArtCentre into a leading contemporary art institution of Eastern Europe” said Elton John addressing the exhibition visitors.

Describing the showcased works Elton John pointed out that “An Instinctive Eye” “comprises works of the artists who express their points of view on different themes such as identity, estrangement, pop-culture, cultural barriers, human effect on the environment and time flow”.

The exhibition is open for viewing form 16 June through to 12 August 2007.

According to report, the PinchukArtCentre is one of the largest contemporary art centres in Eastern Europe. Since its opening in September 2006, the centre has had over 100 000 visitors. “An Instinctive Eye” is the 4th exhibition held at the PinchukArtCentre.

This year PinchukArtCentre will present Ukraine at the 52nd Venice Biennale with an art project “Poem about an Inland Sea”. Experts claim that the Ukrainian pavilion exhibition is likely to become one of the top three events of this contemporary art forum.
