Poem on the Inner Sea at the 52nd Venice Biennale
1 June 2007 - 30 November 2007

The title of the project recalls the famous film «Poem on the Sea» created based on the script of the outstanding Ukrainian director Olexandre Dovzhenko. Well-known artists from Ukraine, Great Britain and the United States of America feature in the project who will create new works specially for the new exhibition: Serhiy Bratkov (Ukraine), Alexander Hnilitsky and Lesia Zaiats (Ukraine), Boris Mikhailov (Ukraine), Juergen Teller (Germany/Great Britain), Marc Titchner (Great Britain), Sam Taylor-Wood (Great Britain), Dzine (Carlos Rolon; USA).

The art project «Poem on the Inner Sea» demonstrates the joint vision of the authors and their aspiration for exploration of new and active roles of the artist in the society. The exhibition intends to reveal the issues that the famous Ukrainian director Olexander Dovzhenko had been raising for all his life: what does being Ukrainian mean? Who are Ukrainians? Where are they, Ukrainians?

Making direct reference to Ukraine in their own unique way whilst adhering to the underlying theme, Serhiy Bratkov, Boris Mikhailov and Juergen Teller have all produced entirely new photographic work. Sam Taylor-Wood has made two new films, Alexander Hnilitsky/Lesia Zaiats have developed a two room video installation. Mark Titchner has fabricated two sculptures for the exterior of the pavilion. Dzine has manufactured a useable boat to be placed in the Canal.
