History of the prize

The PinchukArtCentre presents the group exhibition of the 20 artists shortlisted of the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013, the third edition of the first private nationwide contemporary art prize in Ukraine for young Ukrainian artists up to 35. For the show all artists, with the support of the PinchukArtCentre, produced new works showing their most advanced artistic position.

The 20 nominees for the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013 were shortlisted by an independent Selection Committee from about 1000 applicants and include Yevgenia Belorusets, Anatoly Belov, Daniil Galkin, Oleg Gryshchenko, Andriy Hir, Dobrinya Ivanov, Zhanna Kadyrova, Olesia Khomenko, Alina Kopitsya, Mariia Kulykivska, Oleksandr Kurmaz, Roman Minin, Lada Nakonechna, Mykola Ridnyi, Ivan Svitlychnyi, Volodymyr Vorotniov, Anna Zvyagintseva, and groups: Melnychuk-Burlaka Group, Open Group, and Synchrodogs.

The exhibition is shown on the 3^rd, 4^th and partially on the 5^th floor. With a special outside project by Oleksandr Kurmaz the PinchukArtCentre continues to bring contemporary art into the public space showing the works inside and around the historical Bessarabskiy market.

In 2013, with the third edition of the PinchukArtCentre Prize it is apparent how important endowment of the prize has been, and how important it is to continue a long-term and sustainable investment in the younger generation.

Eckhard Schneider, General Director of the PinchukArtCentre: “The best young artists in our country could apply for the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013, but at the same time, because it is an open competition, new discoveries have always being made. A new generation of Ukrainian artists is rapidly establishing itself, developing its own artistic language at the borders between national identity and international challenges. The PinchukArtCentre has meanwhile become the important partner for this young generation. We have developed a complex framework to provide them with support.”

The winners of the Main and the two Special prizes will be determined by the International Jury who will come to Kyiv. The winners will be announced during the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013 Award Ceremony that will take place in December 2013 in Kyiv.

The International Jury of the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013:

• Ilya Chichkan, artist, Kyiv, Ukraine;
• Leanne Sacramone, Curator, Fondation Cartier pour l’Art contemporarian, Paris, France;
• Dimitri Ozerkov, Director of the Contemporary Art Department, The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia;
• Thierry Raspail, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Artistic Director of the Biennale de Lyon, France;
• Eckhard Schneider, General Director of the PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv, Ukraine;
• Catherine Wood, Curator of Contemporary Art and Performance, Tate Modern, London, UK.

The winners of the Main and two Special Prizes will receive cash awards of UAH 100 000 and UAH 25 000 respectively. Additionally, all of they will have one month residence in studios of internationally renowned artists. The winner of the Main Prize will also be automatically included in the short list of the Future Generation Art Prize 2014 – the first global contemporary art prize to discover, recognize and give long-term support to a future generation of artists.

The winner of the Public Choice Prize shall be determined by the vote of the exhibition visitors. The voting will last from October 31 to December 1, 2013 at the PinchukArtCentre. The winner of the Public Choice Prize will be awarded UAH 10 000.

Voting procedure for the Public Choice Prize nomination: 

One may get a voting form at the PinchukArtCentre reception. The filled in form should be put into the box installed next to the reception on the 2^nd floor or on the 4^th floor in the hall, next to the elevator. Only one vote per person and for one candidate is permitted.

Seven of the 20 PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013 nominees had been selected for the short list of the Prize in 2009 and 2011: Daniil Galkin (2011), Dobrinya Ivanov (2011), Zhanna Kadyrova (2009 and 2011), Lada Nakonechna (2009 and 2011), Mykola Ridnyi (2011), Ivan Svitlychnyi (2011) and Olesia Khomenko (2009 and 2011). Additionally, Zanna Kadyrova became the winner of the first Special PinchukArtCentre Prize in 2011.
