On Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at 19:00 PinchukArtCentre invites to the Literature Night held within the framework of the Future Generation Art Prize 2012. The mission of the event is to continue a dialogue between art and literature, to demonstrate how they interplay, and to offer a fresh look at the exhibits thought unusual “text” optics. The art centre’s Literature Nights feature well-known poets and writers. Admission is free.
The event is intended to explore interaction of the media and to lay a variety of artistic languages to onto each other. This action is fragmentary and complete at the same time. It will resemble a three-act play or a journey through three circles with a curator-guide leading it.
19:00–20:00
“Game Circle”
Space with installation by R.E.P., 3rd floor
Poetic play of Ukrainian poets Kateryna Babkina, Anatoliy Dnistrovyi, Yuriy Izdryk,
Anna Maligon, Bogdan Matiyash, Hryhoriy Semenchuk and others, suggests layering of languages in a strict sense. Each Ukrainian poetic text that has been read will be automatically translated by the Google Translate into a random language and back again. This activity will help explore the idea of an “identity” - translation of languages and translation of cultures. It will also result in multilayered texts, literally. This poetic play harmonizes with multi-layered work by R.E.P.
20:00–21:00
“Life Circle”
Space with the works by Lynette Yadom-Boakye, 4th floor
Writer Irena Karpa will be reading texts from her book “From the dew, from the water and from the mud puddle” about culture of the everyday, which is a specific experiment in applied anthropology of everyday life in the Western Ukraine demonstrated through the example of the daily lives of children, adults and teenagers in the town of Yaremche. It is no coincidence that the action will unfold in the space with the works of Lynette Yadom-Boakye, the winner of the Main Prize of the Future Generation Art Prize 2012. Through the portraits of black people the artist seems to conduct an anthropological research.
21:00–22:00
«Movement Circle»
Space with the works by Emily Roysdon, 4th floor
In the exhibition space with the works of Emily Roysdon there will be a performance by “DRUMTIATR” featuring Yuriy Izdryk, Hrehoriy Semenchuk and Oleksiy Hmyria. Musical performance interacts with the idea of movement. We move from words to sound, from poetry to music, from life to performance, from a clear mind to suggestion, and in the opposite direction.
From 19:00 to 22:00 the space with the work of Abigail DeVille will transform into a reading room. Each visitor will be given a folder with the same or different sets of nearly random text. Through co-creation and games, readers will evince their own “footprints” in the resulting texts. The happening reveals reading as a process of creation rather than consumption. Reading is underlining and coloring, adding and striking out, illustrating and changing the sequence of pages, and so forth. That is, each previous reading leaves its mark, becomes a text for further reading. The result of this process will be a demonstration of the layers of reading and their impact on subsequent readers – similar to how the garbage left by each generation - from which Abigail DeVille creates her work of art - affects future generations.
The event curator is Iryna Slavinska, literature observer, TV presenter, translator, member of the Ukrainian PEN Club and the Independent Media Trade Union.
