From March 22 to 29, 2015, International Documentary Human Rights Film Festival Docudays UA and the PinchukArtCentre invite to a series of public film screenings and discussions in the framework of the DOCU/ART program. All events will be held at the PinchukArtCentre and cinema “Kyiv”. Admission is free.
DOCU/ART is one of the festival’s programs which presents three documentaries: “Is the Man Who is Tall Happy?”, “The Salt of the Earth”, “Art and Craft”, and four discussions focusing on how artistic interpretation, illustrated by a documentary, can change perception of reality. On the one hand, documentary is a genre which claims objectivity, but on the other, keeping in mind the presence of operator and editor, it is unable to overcome subjectivity completely. Therefore, in all three films included in the DOCU/ART program, the author’s position is not just highlighted – it sets the whole background.
The program opens with the animation documentary Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy created by the famous French feature film and music video director Michel Gondry. The main character of the documentary is an American intellectual Noam Chomsky who in his time made a revolutionary assumption that a human learns language differently as opposed to the official scientific views.
An insightful story with a biblical title The Salt of the Earth by directors Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado deals with an interesting and controversial theme of a manipulative power of photography. The documentary tells about a famous master of social photography, Sebastião Salgado, who witnessed and photographed nearly all vices of mankind: war, famine, genocide.
The third documentary Art and Craft is a controversial art detective story the authenticity of which is hard to be believed in. The story focuses on one of the most prolific art forgers in US history Mark Landis, who had been “stuffing” American museums with Picasso’s and Walt Disney’s artworks of his own production for years.
Due to the limited number of seats an advance registration to all events held in thePinchukArtCentre is mandatory. Please call +380 44 590 08 58. All registered participants are eligible for priority entry.
