On February 25, 2017 the PinchukArtCentre (Kyiv, Ukraine) presents an exhibition of the 21 shortlisted artists for the fourth edition of the Future Generation Art Prize, the first global art prize for artists up to 35, founded by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in 2009. The show focuses on the presentation of recent and newly produced works.
The exhibition engages with the complexities of the contemporary world and explores the role and status of art within it. Poised between the personal and the collective, imaginary and real, familiar and uncanny, the show proposes a captivating journey through parallel realities where idiosyncratic experiences and global phenomena intersect.
Formally rich and visually intriguing, the exhibition features diverse works developed in a variety of media. Many are immersive and engaging, precisely drafted situations with often subtle references to the local, Ukrainian condition, inviting viewer response. The attempt to envisage future scenarios in a world defined by precariousness and uncertainties is confronted with in-depth exploration of the self – raising the question of social responsibility of the artist not only as a visionary of the future but foremost as an advocate for change.

With this exhibition in Kyiv, we bring 21 shortlisted artists from all over the world to Ukraine, highlighting Kyiv’s scope as a hub of contemporary culture, while inspiring the local art scene. For the first time in the history of the prize, it has been curated by a guest curator, Anna Smolak.”
20 shortlisted artists have been selected from more than 4 400 from 138 countries by an international Selection Committee. The Open Group from Ukraine were automatically nominated to the shortlist as winners of the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2015, a national contemporary art prize awarded to young Ukrainian artists up to the age of 35.

The International Jury of the Future Generation Art Prize 2017:
The main prize will be awarded by an international jury in the amount of US$ 100 000, split between $60 000 in cash and $40 000 investment in the production of a new work. In addition US$ 20 000 will be awarded to up to five Special Prize winners, nominated by the Jury.
The exhibition will be open from February 25, 2017 until April 16, 2017 in the PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv, Ukraine. Opening hours: from Tuesday through Sunday from 12 noon to 9 pm. Admission is free.
Anna Smolak is a curator based in Krakow, Poland and recently in Kyiv, Ukraine. She is a graduate of history of art at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and cultural diplomacy at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw. She is interested in contemporary institutional critique and the examination of alternative modes of collaboration and organization. She has been investigating the notions of locality, periphery, and exclusion, focusing particularly on east European and post-Soviet contexts, while contributing with exhibitions and projects to numerous institutions in Poland and abroad.
About the Future Generation Art Prize
All artists up to the age of 35 of all backgrounds, working in any medium, anywhere in the world are encouraged to apply for the Future Generation Art Prize. Supporting the application process, more than 600 correspondents all over the world nominate artists for the prize and over 50 Partner Platforms worldwide are ambassadors for the Prize to encourage artists within their regions to apply.

The PinchukArtCentre, founded in September 2006 in Kyiv by the Ukrainian businessman and philanthropist Victor Pinchuk, is the largest and most dynamic private contemporary art centre in Central and Eastern Europe. Over 2.7 million mostly young Ukrainians visited the PinchukArtCentre since 2006.
For more than a decade, the PinchukArtCentre has brought works of over 150 international artists to Ukraine providing free access to new ideas, perceptions and emotions. Its programs negotiate between national identity and international challenges.
At the same time the PinchukArtCentre invests in the next generation. In 2009, it established the PinchukArtCentre Prize for young Ukrainian contemporary artists up to the age of 35 and the Future Generation Art Prize, the first global art prize for young international artists. Through the biennial Prizes, the PinchukArtCentre has become a leading hub for the best emerging artists worldwide and in Ukraine.
The PinchukArtCentre has also represented Ukraine at the Venice Biennale in 2007, 2009, 2015 and organized collateral events at the Biennale in 20011 and 2013.
In 2016, the PinchukArtCentre launched Research platform – a pioneering project that aims to generate a living archive of Ukrainian Art from the early 1980s up to the present.

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation is an international, private and non-partisan philanthropic foundation based in Ukraine. It was established in 2006 by businessman and public figure Victor Pinchuk. Its goal is to empower the younger generation to change their country and the world.
