The PinchukArtCentre presents the 7th PAC-UA project – an exhibition by Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadyrova. “Crowd” is a new series of works by Kadyrova especially created for the PinchukArtCentre. It is composed of glass panels containing collages made of newspapers clips. She uses newspapers from all over the world – Ukraine, Poland, Austria, China, India, etc. – issued in the period from January to June 2012. It is the beginning of an ongoing project that will last till December 2012.
Taking one newspaper, she cuts out portraits of all people seen on its pages, re-composes them, juxtaposing people of different social status, political position or religion side by side. Papers from different countries lose all reference to text and language apart from the title of the paper which “frames” the faces in a geographical culture context. This ongoing archival process reflects on media strategies, marking globalization of mediatized images.
Zhanna Kadyrova, artist: “I work with reality and I only reveal things that have always existed. These are my observations, which I reveal afterwards. Everything I do is all about our time, about our reality.”
Bjorn Geldhof, artistic manager of the PinchukArtCentre: “With “Crowd” Kadyrova initiates a new step in her artistic practice where she reflects in a deeper way on the idea of the production through an archival process in a combination with critical understanding of the idea of image and how image is used today within media, within mass media, within mass culture.”
The exhibition is open on the 5th floor from June 27 to August 19, 2012.
