Alevtina Kakhidze. A Walk with Duchamp, or The Rendezvous, 2012. Performance. Several hours
Description
The performance A Walk with Duchamp, or The Rendezvous was a walk by Alevtina Kakhidze through an exhibition at Mystetskyi Arsenal, accompanied by her dog, named after the artist Marcel Duchamp. Since dogs primarily perceive art through strong scent associations, Alevtina observed how Duchamp would interact with the artworks and which pieces would catch his attention. She referred to these reactions as “fatal encounters” and allowed Duchamp to determine which of the objects in the space were true artworks. Kakhidze and Duchamp’s performance entered into dialogue with the exhibition’s title Double Game, within which it took place: after the curatorial selection had already been made, the artist and her dog carried out an additional round of validation for the works.
The performance was part of the exhibition Double Game held during the first Kyiv International Biennale of Contemporary Art ARSENALE 2012 at the National Cultural-Art and Museum Complex Mystetskyi Arsenal. The curators of the exhibition were then-director of the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle Fabio Cavallucci and then-deputy director of Mystetskyi Arsenal Oleksandr Solovyov.
