Alevtina Kakhidze’s performance On Property Rights or How to Claim a Jewelry, a Chair, a Yorkshire Terrier and Put It All in One File began with the artist’s inquiry into copyright and other legal matters relevant to contemporary artists. Together with the law firm Law Net and the auction house Korners, she initiated a long-term performance that explored various cases of ownership and management of artworks. For instance, collector Nataliya Hnatyuk commissioned an alternative version of a painting by Mariia Pryimachenko, which required Kakhidze to sign a licensing agreement with the copyright holders of Pryimachenko’s works in order to receive permission to adapt the images. In another case, Kakhidze gifted Hnatyuk her drawing Swarovski Iconic Swan, which meant the collector had to pay a gift tax. The performance lasted approximately two months and took place on Facebook under the hashtag #OnPropertyRights.
